The Girls Always in Need of Protection
There are those types of girls, and everyone has seen them in one form or another, who absolutely cannot take care of themselves and always need protecting. These girls may try to help out, but often times it’s more of a hindrance than any actual help. These are the types of girls who need someone watching them 24/7 because the second you take your eyes off of them they’re kidnapped, or they’re about to be killed. These girls have no concept of hiding or just staying out of the way. They frequently run out into the danger and end up getting the heroes hurt.
Sakura from Tsubasais a perfect example of this type. She has no fighting skills whatsoever and runs into danger to try to help her friends when she should be hiding. She can be congratulated for trying to
help and not abandoning her friends, but really, she should stay out of the way. Syaoran is the hero of Tsubasa and is in love with Sakura. He would do anything for her and goes out of his way to protect her. He ends up getting hurt a lot because of her. Evil things want to posse her, which is not her fault, but because she cannot defend herself Syaoran ends up getting the raw end of that deal. The upside to Sakura is she is loving and sweet. She tends to Syaoran’s wounds after he is finished protecting her and often feels badly that he has to always put himself in danger for her.
Although Sakura is a princess she does not feel entitled to his protection and sometimes runs away to try and spare him. What she does not realize is that by running away, into the open where he cannot protect her, she is creating more work for him than if she had just stayed put. The same is true for when she is kidnapped. If she had never left in the first place, than Syaoran wouldn’t have to spend all of his time chasing after her to rescue her from the evil that has stolen her away.

Can protect themselves but don't
Syaoran Li and Meiling from Cardcaptor Sakura
Meiling Li from Cardcaptor Sakura is also a character who needs constant protection. Meiling is not the lead in this show and is instead a girl competing with the heroine for the love of the hero. Meiling is different from Sakura because she does have martial arts training.
She can take care of herself and has proven that she has the knowledge and talent to do so. This is probably why it is much more frustrating to watch her get rescued so often. She is always getting kidnapped and is constantly under attack.
She has the tools to protect herself, so why doesn’t she? What is more annoying about this character is the fact that she brags about how good at martial arts she is to the heroine. If she were truly as good as she claimed she would not need Li, the hero, to come to her rescue so often. There are instances where she holds her own against the monsters and protects herself, but they’re not as frequent as her needing rescuing. At least Sakura had an excuse for not being able to defend herself, she was never taught. The same is not true of Meiling.
